If you are a professional, whether a consultant, freelancer, or corporate-type, are you linked in? You know, connected to those in-the-know within your industry? Whether you are or are not, the social media networking site LinkedIn offers you the opportunity to connect with the professional connections you are looking for.

I my professional life as a business and executive coach, I am often asked what I believe to be the top strategies to use LinkedIn to connect with the top people. Here are a few of my top picks:

1. Take full advantage of LinkedIn to build awareness of your brand.

2. Update your status regularly with your audience’s needs in mind. For example, share a link to an article they will find interesting, but first preface it with a comment that will help them make the connection to how it relates to them.

3. Post presentations, booklists, and other things that reinforce the image you hope to create. Do not include content on topics that would dilute your brand–save that for Facebook

4. Link to people that can provide value to your network and to whom you can provide value. Both yours and their brands will benefit from the association.

5. Recommendations are great, but screen them to ensure that they enforce your brand before posting. If not, see if you can recommend minor tweaks that will better accomplish this goal. Also, since the recommendation also shows up on your referrers’ profile, recommendations from people with lots of connections in your areas of interest are probably the most valuable.

6. Consider ignoring invitations from those you really do not know well enough to connect them with your network or to ask them for a connection to theirs.

7. Keywords are not the only way to get found. Many people search companies that employ the type of people they are seeking and/or are active contributors on relevant discussion groups. Note that being active and contributing are not always the same thing–ensure that you always add value.

8. If you have your own company, make sure you list it.

If you are out to attract prospective customers, you owe it to yourself and the financial future of your business to learn everything you can about social media.
